Economic Benefits

Built on 30 acres of a former Bethlehem Steel industrial site, Steel Winds contributes $100,000 in voluntary payments towards the city of Lackawanna's general fund each year. This significant new revenue has enabled Lackawanna to build a solid economic foundation for the future.
  • More jobs for Lackawanna residents: The project has created approximately 35 construction, operations, and maintenance jobs.
  • Local, sustainable power to help stabilize electricity costs: The natural, renewable energy produced at Steel Winds provides power for about 9,000 western New York homes each year.
  • New revenue through tourism: Local tourism can be enhanced with the transformation of the abandoned steel production site into a wind farm.
  • Reduced dependence on fossil fuels: Wind energy helps reduce dependence on costly fossil fuel imports, strengthens the diversity of the nation's energy supply, and enhances America's energy independence.
